Humanoid Walking Machine

We are a group of students from the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. Fascinated and inspired by the technical challenge, complexity and innovation we set our self the target to build a humanoid robot during a 1-year student project and to enhance the robot with new features in the following years, which includes also the redesign of specific parts.

Humanoid means similar to humans, so the robot shall look and move as human-like as possible. The robots construction shall be based on human shape consisting of a torso, legs, arms and a head.

However, the development of humanoid robots is not only a gadget, there are higher goals for humanoids in the future. They shall take care of old and handicapped people or perform tasks that are dangerous for humans, like fighting fires or disarming bombs. Research and development in artificial intelligence, robotics and related fields is fostered by the RoboCup initiative, which is a soccer world cup for robots. Our robot is constructed in consideration of the requirements of the RoboCup competition.

The goal of the HWM I project was to complete a humanoid robot capable of standing uprightly on one and two legs, walking, detecting and locating certain objects using a camera and even kicking a ball. It will be the basis for future projects, which will finally enable our robot to participate at the RoboCup challenge.

The goal of the HWM II project is to prepare the robot for the Robocup 2007, which takes place in Atlanta. Therefore a human-like head including at least one camera for image processing should be created. Other goals are to make the robot start-up sequence independent from any stationary basement and to calculate the data for locomotion in real time.

The third project group now focuses on the improvements for finalizing the moveable head (e.g. making a more stable constrution). Furthermore, the computer vision will be improved, in order to recognize several objects. Then it should be possible to avoid obstacles and move around between them.
